The Definitive Guide to Comparing Loan Apps in Nigeria: Safety, True Cost and Your Rights
Quick answer: The TurnetFinance Loan App Comparator shows each lender's regulator status, published interest-rate range, total repayment and effective APR side by side. Before you borrow from any app, confirm it is listed on the FCCPC register of digital money lenders, check who the lender of record is, and work out the true APR. A loan that costs 15% for 7 days is about 782% APR, however small the headline rate sounds.
What the Loan App Comparator Does and Why It Matters
To compare loan apps properly, you must know three things: whether the lender is legal, what the loan really costs, and whether the terms fit your situation. This tool puts those answers in one table for up to six apps. It is built for salary earners, small business owners, students and anyone weighing a short-term loan from a digital lender in Nigeria.
Comparing apps matters because headline rates hide the real cost. Most lenders quote a monthly rate, but loans run for days or weeks, fees are deducted upfront, and prices are set per borrower. Meanwhile, the regulatory picture has tightened: the FCCPC's DEON Regulations took effect in July 2025 and the compliance deadline passed on 5 January 2026, so lenders that are not registered are operating outside the rules.
How each figure is calculated
- Rate scenario: every lender prices borrowers by risk, so the tool shows the lowest advertised rate, the midpoint of the published range, or the highest advertised rate. None is a quote.
- Two APR figures: lender listings usually quote the simple figure. When you repay in equal monthly instalments the effective figure is higher, because interest is charged on the full amount even as your balance falls. The tool shows both.
- Flat interest: the tool charges interest on the original amount for the full term, the most common digital-lender method. Reducing-balance lenders can cost less.
- Upfront fee: enter any fee shown on your offer screen. It is deducted from the cash you receive, which raises the APR.
- Eligibility flags: where a lender publishes a minimum repayment period or maximum loan, the tool warns you if your inputs fall outside it.
Borrowing Legally: FCCPC, CBN, GSI and Your Rights
The FCCPC register and the DEON Regulations
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) regulates digital lenders through its Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional (DEON) Consumer Lending Regulations 2025, which took effect on 21 July 2025. Lenders must register and be approved, and the commission set 5 January 2026 as the compliance deadline. Under the Regulations lenders must not contact third parties to pressure borrowers, may not access your contacts, call logs or photos, may not charge for products you did not request, and must comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Reported penalties reach โฆ100 million or 1% of annual turnover for a company (Technext).
The official FCCPC page, checked on 5 October 2026, listed 387 fully approved apps or companies, 40 conditional approvals, 88 watchlist apps and 47 delisted apps, plus 21 CBN-licensed lenders granted waivers. Press reports cite larger totals (BusinessDay reported 457 with full approval), so the page may lag and you should check it live. Enforcement has also moved in 2026: a Federal High Court injunction in April partly suspended it, and in July the court upheld the FCCPC's powers and enforcement resumed (Nairametrics). Registration is a safety filter: it tells you a lender is approved to operate, not that it is cheap.
Why lender-of-record matters
Some apps are run by CBN-licensed microfinance banks, such as FairMoney, Carbon, Renmoney and Okash (Blue Ridge Microfinance Bank). Those lenders fall under CBN oversight for their banking operations but still need FCCPC registration or a waiver to operate as digital lenders (Techpoint). Others are run by finance companies or non-bank lenders. The distinction affects your complaint route and whether a debit mandate can be used against you. The comparator's Safety view shows the lender of record for each app.
The Global Standing Instruction (GSI) mandate
The CBN's Global Standing Instruction guidelines (CBN guidelines), issued on 13 July 2020 and implemented from 1 August 2020, let a lender recover a defaulted loan from accounts you hold at other banks. Four points matter. The borrower must sign a GSI mandate, and accounts are tracked through the borrower's BVN. A BVN is watch-listed if a qualifying account is not linked to it. Participating lenders must be CBN-licensed financial institutions (TNP review). A GSI can recover principal and accrued interest only, not penal charges (Mondaq). The CBN amended the guidelines in January 2022 so recovery attempts are continuous and unrestricted (TheCable). So when a page claims every loan app can debit every account you own, it is overstating the rule.
Credit bureaus and your data
Defaults can be reported to licensed credit bureaus such as CRC Credit Bureau, FirstCentral and CreditRegistry, which affects your ability to borrow from banks later. Your personal data is protected by the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and enforced by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. The CBN policy rate was cut to 23% on 22 September 2026, but digital lenders price far above that, as the next section shows.
The True Cost of Quick Credit
A short loan with a modest-looking fee can carry an enormous annual rate. Take a โฆ50,000 loan from a lender that charges 15% flat for a 7-day term:
- Cost: 15% of โฆ50,000 is โฆ7,500, so you repay โฆ57,500 after one week.
- Weekly rate to annual: 15% ร (365 รท 7) = about 782% APR.
- Monthly equivalent: roughly 65% a month, if you kept re-borrowing on the same terms.
Published examples from registered lenders show the same pattern, as the table below shows.
| Example | Cost | APR | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-day loan, 15% flat | โฆ7,500 on โฆ50,000 | about 782% | Our calculation |
| Branch: โฆ60,000 for 62 days | โฆ18,400 interest (โฆ78,400 total) | 181% | Branch Play listing |
| PalmPay: โฆ1,000 for 90 days | โฆ90 interest | 36% | PalmPay Play listing |
| FairMoney: โฆ100,000 for 3 months | โฆ6,000 interest (listing example) | 24% | FairMoney App Store |
| FairMoney: 30% over 3 months | โฆ30,000 per โฆ100,000 (reported) | 120% | Review site (The Condia), reported |
| QuickCheck: published range | 1% to 21% a month | 30% to 260% | QuickCheck Play listing |
The gap between FairMoney's two examples shows why you must check your own offer. Prices vary by borrower, and reports say new borrowers are often priced near the top of a lender's range. Also read the due date on your actual offer screen, because the repayment period in an app description may not match the offer you receive.

Before You Borrow: A Practical Checklist
- Check the register. Search the company and app name on the FCCPC register of digital money lenders. If it is on the watchlist or delisted list, or missing, do not borrow.
- Find the lender of record. The app store listing and loan agreement name the company that actually lends. Confirm it matches the register.
- Get the total repayment in naira. Ignore the monthly rate until you see the full amount you will repay and the due date.
- Run the APR. Put the amount, repayment, days and fees into the True APR Checker above.
- Refuse unnecessary permissions. A lender does not need your contacts, call logs or gallery. Under the DEON Regulations it should not ask.
- Read any GSI or direct-debit mandate. Know which accounts it covers before you sign.
- Test affordability. Use the Loan Calculator and your monthly budget. If the repayment is above what you can spare, borrow less or choose a longer tenure.
- Never borrow from one app to repay another. Stacking loans multiplies fees and is the fastest route to a debt spiral.
- Keep records and report abuse. Save screenshots and agreements. Report harassment or data misuse to the FCCPC, and report CBN-licensed lenders' conduct to the CBN consumer protection channel.
Sources and Methodology
Every figure and rule used by the comparator is listed with its source. "Official" means a government or regulator publication, "lender listing" means the app's own store page, and "reported" means press or comparison sites, which can lag.

Limits to keep in mind: lenders change prices and terms often, ranges are not quotes, and the register page itself reflects the FCCPC's own update schedule. Kuda, Renmoney and Carbon figures rest on press reports, so confirm in the app. We update the "last checked" date on the tool when the data is reviewed.
Frequently Asked Questions About Loan Apps in Nigeria
Can a loan app block my BVN in Nigeria?
No rule we reviewed gives a loan app the power to block your BVN. The BVN is issued and managed through NIBSS under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), not by individual lenders.
What a lender can do after a default is report you to a credit bureau and, if it is a CBN-licensed institution and you signed a Global Standing Instruction (GSI) mandate, debit principal and interest from accounts linked to your BVN. Under the GSI guidelines, accounts that are not linked to your BVN can put the BVN on a watch-list. Anyone who threatens to "block your BVN" is not describing a real power, so keep the messages and report them to the FCCPC.
Which loan apps are approved by the FCCPC?
The official FCCPC register page we checked on 5 October 2026 listed 387 fully approved apps or companies, including FairMoney MFB, Carbon MFB, Branch, Okash (Blue Ridge MFB), Renmoney MFB and QuickCheck (Arve Limited). PalmPay appears under CBN-licensed waivers.
The same page lists 40 conditional approvals, 88 apps on a watchlist and 47 delisted apps. BusinessDay has reported that 457 lenders hold full approval under the 2025 DEON Regulations, so the page may lag. Always verify a lender on the live register before you download or share any documents.
What happens if I cannot pay back a Nigerian loan app on time?
You will usually owe late fees under your agreement, your default can be reported to credit bureaus, and a CBN-licensed lender may use a GSI mandate to recover principal and interest from your linked accounts. A GSI cannot be used to collect penalty interest.
A lender may also pursue lawful recovery, but harassment, public shaming and messaging your contacts are banned under the FCCPC's DEON Regulations. Contact the lender before the due date, ask in writing for a restructure or extension, and avoid borrowing from a second app to repay the first.
Can a loan app call or message my phone contacts?
Not lawfully. The DEON Regulations 2025 bar lenders from accessing your contacts, call logs and photos, and from contacting third parties to shame or pressure you.
Penalties for breaches can reach โฆ100 million for a company. If a lender messages your family, friends or colleagues, take screenshots, note the app and company name, and file a complaint with the FCCPC. Never grant contact or gallery permission as a condition of getting a loan.
How do I calculate the real APR of a loan app?
Divide the total cost of the loan by the cash you actually receive, then multiply by 365 and divide by the number of days. A โฆ50,000 loan repaid as โฆ57,500 after 7 days costs 15% in a week, which is about 782% APR.
Include any upfront fee, because it reduces the cash you receive. The True APR Checker above does this in one step, and the Loan Calculator shows the full repayment schedule for longer loans.
Does being on the FCCPC list mean a loan app is cheap?
No. Registration means the lender has been approved to operate, not that its prices are low. Registered apps publish APRs as high as 260% (QuickCheck) and 271% (Branch).
Compare the total repayment and effective APR on your own offer screen, and treat the FCCPC register as the first safety filter, not the last.
